How to Show Up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for Local Searches

Clickspire Team··9 min read

AI Search is changing how customers find local businesses. Here is how to get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews when buyers ask for recommendations in your city.

When a homeowner used to look for a plumber, they typed "plumber near me" into Google and picked from the local 3-pack. Today, a growing share of those same homeowners are typing the same question into ChatGPT, Perplexity, or asking Google directly and reading the AI Overview before they ever scroll. The shortlist is being written by an AI model, not by ten blue links, and if your business is not named, you are invisible.

What is AI Search Optimization?

AI Search Optimization, also called Generative Engine Optimization or GEO, is the practice of structuring your website, content, and online signals so large language models pick your business as the answer. It overlaps with traditional SEO, but the ranking signals are different. AI engines do not just count backlinks. They look for clear, factual content, structured data they can trust, and consistent mentions of your business across the web.

The five things AI search engines look for

  1. Clear, factual content. AI engines prefer text that directly answers questions. Long-winded marketing copy gets skipped over for content that says, "We are an electrician based in Toronto serving Etobicoke, North York, and Scarborough."
  2. Schema markup that names your entity. LocalBusiness, Organization, and FAQ schema tell AI engines exactly what your business is, where it operates, and what questions it answers.
  3. Consistent citations across the web. Your business name, address, and phone should be identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, Yelp, industry directories, and any press mentions.
  4. Topical authority. AI engines favor sites that publish multiple pieces of content on the same theme. A plumber with ten pages about drain cleaning, water heaters, and pipe repair will beat one with a single homepage.
  5. Mentions in trusted sources. Reviews on Google, a feature in a local news site, a guest post on a contractor industry blog. AI models trained on the open web see these and weigh them.

How to test if AI engines already know your business

Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Type the same query a customer would type: "best electrician in Hamilton" or "who is the top dentist in Mississauga for Invisalign." Read the answer. If you are named, you have entity recognition. If your top competitor is named and you are not, that is the gap you need to close.
